The poet appears to be emotional about his past considering his thoughts are stimulated by different landscapes through physical journey. He uses a dramatic plot in the form of a soliloquy. Arnold also uses descriptive adjectives, similes and metaphors to create the mood. Through the use of these literary elements, Arnold portrays the man standing before the window pondering the sound of the pebbles tossing in the waves as representation of human suffering. The man arrives at the vision of humanity being helpless against nature. Arnold creates the mood by suggesting mental pictures, actions, sights and sounds the man sees.
Dover Beach intrigued me as soon as I read the title. I have a great love of beaches, so I feel a connection with the speaker as he or she stands on the cliffs of Dover, looking out at the sea and reflecting on life. Arnold successfully captures the mystical beauty of the ocean as it echoes human existence and the struggles of life. The moods of the speaker throughout the poem change dramatically as do the moods of the sea. The irregular, unordered rhyme is representative of these inharmonious moods and struggles. In this case, the speaker seems to be struggling with the relationship with his or her partner. The poem I will be analysing today is Song of the Surf by Dan Ashlin. Ashlin is a born and bred Australian poet who writes modern poems. Matthew Arnold is one of the many famous and prolific writers from the nineteenth century. The two poems have in common various characteristics, such as the theme and style. The feelings of the speakers of the poem also resemble each other significantly. The poems are concerned with the thoughts and feelings of humans living in an uncertain world. In this we can see the use of personification as he says that the waves have soft white hands.
This shows a gentle and soothing effect in which nature has to clear the footprints off the sands with their hands. Death is inevitable as shown in a relatable cycle with nature where the tide rises and falls, giving a comfort to individual to understand that death is just a process. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow poetry reflects his ideal on nature and its comforting. When I was a little girl at early of my age, I spent a wonderful time with my grandma near a sea in my hometown during the last two months of her life.
That was the first time we saw the smile back to her face since we got the news that she got intestine cancer. The three crucial poem-writing elements, sound, structure, and figurative language make the power of sea more vivid just like a picture we could see and have physical feelings about. And when we try to get a deeper understanding of the poem, it is the sound that we hear first. This contrast serves to communicate the scattered nature of our consciousness with the unity, elegance and fluidity of our subconscious. This imagery is furthered by the 3 line-long segment, uninterrupted by punctuation.
Hearing is an auditory action that allows one to be aware of the presence of the object through the sound, but not visually or physically grasp it. This suggests that inspiration is similar, in the sense that one can be aware of it but cannot consciously grasp, control or dominate it. Imagery is the strongest supporter of the theme. A description of the sea in its states of calmness and roughness are depicted. Sight and sound help intensify other images. Arnold uses the first stanza of the poem to create visual, auditory, and olfactory images that will allow the reader to picture the sea of which the speaker is viewing. Through the use of several poetic Figures of speech, sounds, and irony of words are also used. With this description one can imagine a beautiful beach with water lapping upon the shore.
The second line also gives the image of a calm sea. In contrast the ending stanzas use words such as. The poem contains two stanzas with two different settings. One might not know much about the first stanza; however, in the second one the speaker is next to an ocean, perhaps, at a beach. So, while the first stanza symbolizes the mindset of the speaker, the inner dream, the second stanza symbolizes the outer dream which is what we see; life. The poem. But as the poem continues, it is interrupted by events that are unnaturalistic which shifts the view of the beach. This excerpt further justifies that men have become too overwhelming and warlike to a point where everyone wants to flee from the danger.
There is a towing company in central florida that does something similar on the beach boardwalks, they put the signs up facing AWAY from the lot so you can't see them until you actually get out of your car and go to the beach, and they will have an employee in plain clothes and a binocolar calling the towing truck so by the time you go to move your car, it's already loaded up and there's "nothing they can do" so you have to pay hundreds of dollars to get your car back. It's basically extortion, its terrible. Estuaries are known for being sensitive to several human activities, such as littering and building structures like dams and seawalls that affect their natural flow of freshwater. UFL geologist John M. The place where I feel most comfortable is a place where I am calm.
A place that is peaceful in its own ways. It is the place to go to get away from all my troubles. It is the one place where I could sit forever, and never get tired of just staring into the deepest blue I have ever seen. It is the place where I can sit and think the best. A place where nothing matters but what is in that little moment. The one place capable of sending my senses into an overload. This place is the ocean. Essay Topics Writing.
